How much water in a bathtub?

You will need: an empty gallon (or half gallon) container, a watch, a bathtub

First, make a prediction.    I think there are ____ gallons of water in a bathtub.

1. Turn on water to the speed you would fill your bathtub. (open drain)

2. Time how long it takes to fill your 1 gallon container.

Record the time.   A ______ minutes

Leave the water running.

3. Empty container. Close drain. Time how long it takes to fill the bathtub.

Record the time.    B _____ minutes

Take a bath.

Now calculate how much water you used. You may use a calculator.

Divide B   ______          divided by A ________       =      _______
Total time to                           Time to fill            Number of
fill the tub                               1 gallon              gallons used
If you used a half gallon container divide the last number, your answer, by 2,
to give you how many gallons.
This may help.       30 seconds = .5 minute          6 sec. = .1 min.
                             15 sec. = .25 min.                45 sec. = .75 min.
