1. Always
begin the conference with something positive.
Be sure to end the conference on a positive note.
2. Only talk to the parent about
their child.
Keep other students' names out of the discussion.
3. Omit comments about the child's
school experiences in previous years.
4. Show or cite examples of
student's work.
5. Warn parents about any possible
health problems.
6. Mention some of your past,
present, and future activities.
7. Write down any 'problems'
or concerns that require further attention.
8. Listen.
9. Accept parents as they are,
not as you expect them to be.
10. Be relaxed ... Smile.
Watch your
time schedule. The waiting parent is just as important as the parent
you are talking to. If you keep
a parent waiting for 20 minutes beyond the
appointed time, the conference is
starting out on a negative note.
